Coastland Starts Up Second Westmill 2 Zone Dryer Conversion
Coastland Wood Industries of Delta, British Columbia, recently installed and started up their second Westmill veneer dryer remodel. The first of the Westmill dryers, an 8-deck 19-section, Single Zone Longitudinal Dryer, was rebuilt and converted to a two-zone at Coastland’s facility in May 2002. Its performance gains led Coastland to quickly purchase a second Dryer remodel, a 6-deck 19-section Longitudinal, installed in January 2003.

Coastland allowed 15 days of dryer down time complete the entire rebuild project; we completed it in 13. Westmill supplied pre-built door cartridges, delivery & return manifolds and pre-assembled fan assemblies to facilitate the quick installation, which is typical for a Westmill dryer conversion. Demolition took 2 days, building of the dryer including installation of Westmill’s insulated Stainless floor was completed in just 10 days, and start was completed on the last day.

On both dryers, Westmill was able to convert both the dead air and cooling sections to heated sections allowing maximum veneer production in a mill that does not lay-up, and thus does not require veneer cooling.

Westmill’s supply included: new stainless 2 sided dryer doors complete with Westmill’s patented Articulating Door Hardware system, Westmills quick install door cartridge system, main circ-air fans complete with motors and Variable Frequency Drives, Maxon Ovenpak gas burners & controls, Westmill’s insulated stainless steel floor system, humidity and temperature control systems, Digital Chart recorder, programming and manufacturing of PLC cabinets and VFD cabinets.
